Sousa Middle School
At John Philip Sousa Middle School, excellence is the standard! Our goal is to help our students become change agents in their communities and the world at large. We set extremely high expectations for our students and utilize technology to enrich our strong academic programs. We offer a variety of classes that push students to become productive citizens, and leaders in the quest for social justice. Additionally, we provide resources that promote social growth and character development. Through critical thinking, inquiry, creativity and appreciation of the arts, Sousa Scholars are able to connect to themselves, each other, all cultures, and the beauty of the world. The arts, including dance/ movement, theater/ drama, music, and visual arts are integrated into the curriculum of all grades and classes.
What the UDC Scholars (Junior Firebirds) Program Offers
Dual Enrollment. Junior Firebirds have access to free dual enrollment classes at UDC and the potential to earn college credits. UDC will cover out-of-pocket costs for books and technology devices and transportation to the classes.
Paid Internships, Tutoring, and Mentorship. UDC and its partners are offering Junior Firebirds access to paid summer internships that will give them an advantage in obtaining future jobs in high-paying fields. UDC is also providing tutors and mentors to help students prepare for their academic or job pursuits after they leave the Anacostia High School feeder pattern.
Family Academies. UDC wants the entire family of Anacostia High School feeder pattern Junior Firebirds to benefit from the UDC Scholars program. UDC is offering free Community College campus tuition to parents, siblings, and designated caregivers whose students enroll in a four-year degree program at UDC.
Work-Based Learning. UDC and its partners are underwriting the cost of learning experiences to exciting destinations in and out of the District of Columbia for UDC Scholars.
Teacher Training. UDC understands that teachers are key to the success of students in the Anacostia High School feeder pattern. UDC believes that a teacher’s belief in and support for all Junior Firebirds is enhanced by the training opportunities it will provide the corps of teachers.
